This is the 22nd post in my series of posts about story arcs in the Hayate no Gotoku manga.

Two Standalone Chapters Featuring Hinagiku's Ears and Hayate's Skills
Includes chapters 267 and 273.

Events
Hinagiku wakes up to find that she has grown animal ears and realizing that a curse has been placed upon her goes to see Isumi for help. (Ch. 267)
Isumi suggests wearing a hat, but Hinagiku wants the curse gone so Isumi tells her she needs some money; after hearing the amount Isumi wants, Hinagiku goes with the hat. (Ch. 267)
Hinagiku takes off the hat because it stands out and Hayate sees her new ears when he comes into the council room without knocking; Hinagiku explains her situation and Hayate suggests that she work for Isumi to pay for her treatment. (Ch. 267)
Hinagiku decides to do dangerous and high paying work until she hears it involves flying and decides to do easy work instead; afterward Isumi reveals to Sakuya that she has been speaking in terms of Zimbabwean currency for a while. (Ch. 267)
As Hayate gives Risa and Izumi some of his homemade food, Risa observes that many people seem out of energy that day. (Ch. 273)
In the Student Council room, Yukiji is lazing around and Miki suggests that Yukiji change her life by getting a lover like Kaoru; Yukiji agrees that Kaoru is great, but says that he lacks the ability to get her heart beating. (Ch. 273)
Kaoru, who overheard the conversation, wonders out loud where he could learn the skill the Yukiji wants in her man and Risa suggests that he take lessons from Hayate. (Ch. 273)
Risa and Kaoru watch as Hayate excites girls playing basketball, a girl who needed some sewing done, and Hinagiku in an attempt to learn how Hayate does what he does; Kaoru tries what he learned the next day, but it is shown he learned the wrong things as he simply wears clothes like Hayate. (Ch. 273)
Arc End
A New Start at the Violet Mansion: A Long Arc
Includes chapters 268 - 272 and 274 - 279

Events/Major
Maria says that living in a new place and working will be good for Nagi, but Nagi tells Maria her plan to buy and rent out an apartment so that she will not have to work to live. (Ch. 268)
Nagi then gives Hayate the responsibility of finding a new place for her and Maria that also has room to rent out. (Ch. 268)
Hayate begins looking for an apartment to buy and goes into a real estate office, staffed by one of the Yakuza from the early chapters, and is told that there is nothing in his price range. (Ch. 269)
The Yakuza then suggests a way for Hayate to buy an apartment cheap that involves Hayate dressing as a girl and asking for a rich guy to let him buy the apartment cheap. (Ch. 269)
Hayate, having run into Klaus at the end of the last chapter, is shown an apartment that Klaus is willing to give to Nagi for her to live in. (Ch. 270)
Klaus talks about how he came to receive the apartments, called the Violet Mansion, from Yukariko around thirty years prior; as they prepare to leave, Hayate feels a presence in the apartment that makes him uneasy and causes him to want to stay there that night alone. (Ch. 270)
Hayate tells Maria why he wants to go alone, Maria decides to go with him to clean the apartments, and they split up to make cleaning easier, despite Hayate's fears. (Ch. 271)
Hayate finds the rooms full of cats who attack Hayate, which causes Hayate becomes worried for Maria's safety so he runs to her and discovers that she handled the cats well by simply treating them like cats. (Ch. 271)
Nagi tells Isumi and Sakuya about her plans for the new house before calling Maria to ask how long she is going to take; Maria observes Hayate's strength and laments that she is kind of sweaty and they are running out of cleaning supplies which causes Hayate to suggest that Maria take a bath while he fetches some more supplies. (Ch. 272)
While in the bath, Maria thinks about how her life has become easier since Hayate came and realizes that she needs a towel and a change of clothes. (Ch. 272)
Maria calls Hayate to get a towel, Hayate realizes that Maria needs some clothes without her telling him, and Maria tells him that he can just bring her dresser with her clothes after he is less delicate with his words than she likes. (Ch. 272)
Nagi tries to fix dinner, but fails as always and gets Maria to get dinner; while eating Nagi remembers something her mother told her about a promise she made to a cat in the apartment. (Ch. 274)
After Maria leaves, Hayate finds a strange note, goes out to buy some dinner and runs into Hinagiku and Izumi who decide to go back to the apartment with him after seeing his choice of food and hearing that something odd is up with the apartment. (Ch. 274)
Izumi wanders around the apartment while Hinagiku cooks and Izumi becomes possessed by the ghost of the cat that Yukariko promised an apartment tower to if it kept her butler from bringing other women to the apartment. (Ch. 274)
Hinagiku cooks a sizeable meal, which the possessed Izumi seems to enjoy more than anyone else, and asks Hayate what he is going to do that night. (Ch. 275)
As Hinagiku attempts to leave with Izumi, Izumi attacks and wrestles around a bit with Hinagiku and they end up in an awkward position just as Hayate walks in; Hinagiku tells him that Izumi is acting weird and he realizes that Izumi is possessed by a cat spirit. (Ch. 275)
Hayate asks the spirit who he is and why he is doing what he is and the spirit answers by saying that he is the one who has protected and cleaned the place for years because he promised to. (Ch. 275)
The cat thinks back to when he was fed by Yukariko and when he promised to guard her building, Hinagiku tells the cat that he is mistaken about her relationship with Hayate, and the cat asks if Hinagiku loves Hayate which she neither confirms nor denies. (Ch. 276)
Hinagiku then asks the cat exactly what it promised, in an attempt to help the cat leave Izumi, and the cat realizes that it promised to guard the building until Yukariko returned in good health; Nagi then walks in and the cat mistakes her for Yukariko and leaves Izumi when he hears that Nagi is healthy. (Ch. 276)
Isumi explains that the cat left because it no longer had regret and Nagi punishes Hayate for bringing women into the apartments when she thought that he was alone and cold. (Ch. 276)
Hayate, Maria, and Nagi move into the Violet Mansion. (Ch. 277)
Nagi explores the apartments and decides that she will be able to live there regardless of the really old television. (Ch. 277)
Nagi then decides to begin advertising for vacancies in the apartments, but Maria points out that the place isn't exactly attractive; Nagi then tries to find special benefits to the Violet Mansion and Hayate shoots down all as unimpressive. (Ch. 277)
Hayate then thinks of a unique trait of the Violet Mansion which he adds to the advertisement: himself. (Ch. 277)
Chiharu's parents tell her that they will be moving overseas for a weak reason so she runs out and considers moving out of her house, but is unsure of where to go; Chiharu then sees an advertisement for the Violet Mansion and decides to check it out realizing how sad the way her life sounds. (Ch. 278)
Chiharu becomes unsure of moving to the Violet Mansion after seeing that Nagi is the landlady and Hayate tries his best to sell Chiharu on the butler part of the offer by fixing her good tea and giving her a backrub. (Ch. 278)
Chiharu talks about her problems with Nagi and notices that Nagi is playing a game she is too young for when Nagi dismisses her problems so Chiharu decides to join Nagi in playing a more appropriate game. (Ch. 279)
Hayate fixes dinner and the quality of the meal impresses Chiharu; Chiharu then takes a bath and is joined by Nagi who asks about how Chiharu is at other games. (Ch. 279)
Chiharu announces that she will rent an apartment, but when she notices that she has a bunch of missed messages on her phone the look on Chiharu's face causes Nagi to turn her away. (Ch. 279)
Chiharu heads home thinking that she will make up with her parents until she sees that they burned the house down and goes back to the Violet Mansion to actually rent a room this time. (Ch. 279)
Events/Minor
Nagi informs Klaus that she will be leaving her mansion and he begins going to Mikado for information. (Ch. 268)
Klaus is filled in on Nagi's situation by Mikado and Chiharu hears about Nagi's issues when Isumi and Sakuya discuss it. (Ch. 269)
Father Regeoster informs Hayate that he is packing up and coming to the Violet Mansion with Hayate as he is haunting Hayate and compliments Hayate on his good traits. (Ch. 277)
Ayumu talks to Wataru about his family and compares family to body soap. (Ch. 279)
Commentary
This is quite the enjoyable arc, especially after the epic that was Golden Week. In the span of less than ten chapters Hayate finds a new place for Nagi to live, Hayate cleans the apartment of cats, both living and dead, and the first tenant of the Violet Mansion is found. I have to say the part with the ghost cat and with Chiharu are probably my favorite parts of this arc. There's not much else to say besides that this arc grew a little from what had thought when I began as I was originally going to have the part where people start moving into the apartments be separate from the finding/cleaning parts, but I realized that they probably should be together.
