This is the 23rd post in my series of posts about story arcs in the Hayate no Gotoku manga.
Arcs covered include: A Manga Bridge and Ayumu's Birthday, Relocating Tama and Meeting Hinagiku After Dark, and A Visit to Ashibashi-Sensei.

A Manga Bridge and Ayumu's Birthday: A Small Arc
Includes chapters 280 - 282

Characters Introduced:
The Girl Chiharu knows that wants to be a mangaka (Ch. 280)

Nagi announces her intent to become a famous mangaka to Chiharu, Isumi shows off her manga, and Chiharu thinks about someone else who wanted to be a professional mangaka. (Ch. 280)
Ayumu laments the 500 Yen present she received from her parents and the fact that probably nobody remembers her birthday. (Ch. 281)
Hayate bakes cookies for Ayumu, Chiharu suggests they throw a surprise party for Ayumu, and Hayate explains the plan for the party at Café Donguri; Hayate and Hinagiku manage to prevent the surprise from being ruined when Ayumu comes to work and everybody that isn't working that day leaves. (Ch. 281)
Ayumu tries to tell Hayate when her birthday is discreetly first by suggesting it by reading the horoscopes and then trying to get him to ask her when her birthday is by saying that she wants to ask the manager; Hayate manages to avoid spoiling the surprise by telling Ayumu to ask for the birthday in English. (Ch. 282)
After Ayumu leaves and the party is set up, Nagi calls Ayumu back by first telling her she left something behind and then saying that she wants to talk with her; Ayumu comes back after hearing that Nagi wants to talk and the party happens. (Ch. 282)

Commentary
There's not too much to say about this arc as it is really kind of nice how Ayumu gets a party. A discerning reader can tell that chapter 280 really has nothing to do with Ayumu's birthday, but I added it to make the arc a bit longer. I didn't plan to have this post go up on the Tenth of November, but it is nice as this post can now commemorate Yukiji's birthday, which is today.

The dog woman then says that she is destined to be with Hayate and uses some loosely spiritual reasoning to try to convince Nagi which causes Nagi to kick her out; Nagi decides to skip school after the excitement of the morning and elsewhere the dog woman has a phone conversation and reveals her name to be Yozora Housen. (Ch. 287)

Commentary
This arc is quite nice, especially at the beginning with Hayate and Hinagiku having some alone time. This arc also does a fairly decent job of introducing Yozora Housen as a secretive and clever person. I also quite like the appearance of Isumi, even if she really didn't do much. I occurred to me that tomorrow, the eleventh, is Hayate's birthday. As I am not likely to post tomorrow, this post is also going to act as a way to commemorate his birthday, in addition to Yukiji's.
