I finally got around to seeing the episode today as I had things come up yesterday, so the write-up is being done today, a day late. This was a quite heavy episode with the amount of material presented but was quite enjoyable. Onto the write-up now with the typical summary then thoughts format.
This episode begins with a quick recap of some events that happened in the last episode and then moves onto the intro sequence. After the intro, we see Hayate's misfortune (or is it fortune) continue as he walks-in on Hinagiku with only a towel on; Nagi comes in on them in an awkard position and hits Hayate. Next, we move into the Sanzenin room at the hotel where Hayate wonders if Kurotsubaki really is causing him bad luck and Maria, thankfully, points out that seeing Hina nearly nude can't really be considered bad luck. Hayate agrees, Nagi gets irritated, Hayate points out that he has seen Hina in similar positions at the Violet Mansion and Hina steps in to hit Hayate for that comment. The three idiots (Izumi, Risa, and Miki) show up as everybody in the Sanzenin suite discuss what to do about Tsugumi. Hayate reveals that Tsugumi was "kidnapped" and the three take it seriously, steal the ransom note, and run out of the room. Hayate chases after them and runs into Chiharu. Chiharu and Hayate have a awkward moment until Nagi reminds Hayate that he needs to chase down the three idiots. The three attempt to contact Jack Bauer until Hayate stops them. Hayate attempts to get back the ransom note by touching Risa and a nervous police officer nearly shoots Hayate while trying to get Hayate to not harass Risa. Hayate leaves with Kurotsubaki and the midpoint is reached about here.
Hayate meets Yukiji who has come to gamble and tells her about Kurotsubaki. Hearing that it will give the owner good luck around 8:40 she steals Kurotsubaki from Hayate and takes advantage of the good luck to win a lot of money on the slot machines. As she sits in her car with her winnings, Yukiji is robbed of everything she owns including the car. Hayate finds her deject having lost everything and begins to look for Kurotsubaki. After much time he comes back to Maria and Nagi and informs them that he lost Kurotsubaki. Nagi sends him away and decides to go to meet Tsugumi's kidnappers herself without Kurotsubaki; Isumi comes in with Sakuya and tells Nagi that they are coming with her too. Around this time it is revealed by a phone call to Hina that Izumi is in the car that Yukiji had stolen and tells Hina where she is. Nagi and friends finally arrive at the meeting place, by a massive ethereal tree, and tell the woman there that they do not have Kurotsubaki. The woman freaks out and sends Tsugumi and Shidou out to find it. One of the Sanzenin SP's recieves a call from Hayate and he informs his mistress of where Kurotsubaki is having found out, presumably, through Hayate's call. Tsugumi heads out and the woman (who could be the apple tree nymph from Ruka's story due to her next action) causes the roots of the tree to wrap around and imprison Nagi. Isumi attempts to fight, but Saku and she are forced out of the tree's dimension. The scene shifts to Hayate who saves Izumi and Yukiji (who tried to save her money) from the robbers. Hina gets a call from Ayumu who says that the police are about ten minutes away from where the robbers are and Hayate asks Izumi where Kurotsubaki is and she answers. The robbers try to run away but Tsugumi comes out of nowhere to beat them up while avoiding bullets. As Tsugumi tries to defeat the (possibly German) robber who holds Kurotsubaki, the clock transforms into a sword in his hands and Hayate pushes Tsugumi out of the way getting stabbed in her place. Hayate goes a bit pale and we end with Nagi worried about Hayate.
I thought that this episode was excellent. The beginning was nice and fairly lighthearted balancing out the quite dark finale of the episode. It was a bit disappointing that Isumi didn't get to fight this time, but the Tsugumi beatdown of the robbers was nice. I liked how Maria got to point out what many viewers were thinking, that getting to see a young woman nearly naked isn't really bad luck. I also quite like how this trip to Las Vegas is somewhat similar to Golden Week earlier on, but is quite different now. Hayate may have suffered in Athens, but he wasn't stabbed.
It appears that I was incorrect in thinking that Kurotsubaki was just a really powerful yet cursed clock. Sadly, for me anyway, Kurotsubaki does seem to be a rival to Shirosakura simply by being a weapon. It may be a really sinister weapon in contrast to the almost righteous weapon of Shirosakura, but it is simply another weapon. Hopefully next time we will see what getting stabbed has done to Hayate. In addition, I also hope that before the end of the anime Isumi gets to have a proper fight that entails more than hitting Shidou with two spells.
Postscript: At some point in the future I will go through this summary and rewrite it because I have a feeling that I missed some stuff. So for now this post is finished, but slated for rewrite.
